This was a point that my philosophy professor was making in 1983. When people from hunter-gatherer societies see how much we live, how many hours a day we work, they're horrified.
I've since heard that there were many examples of colonists leaving North American colonies to go and live with its indigenous peoples (American Indians, if you have gotten the memo that the latter term is offensive). There are no counter-examples of indigenous people voluntarily going to live with colonists .
