Sorry for the crudity of this reference, but in the Sopranos, a couple of mobsters have a discussion about whether or not to bury the body of one of their victims.

In the case of the "disappeared" victim, the mobster says, "the family doesn't know what happened...but they know."

We White people know what happened. But we were/are trying real hard not to know.
