My son was 3 when he said that he didn’t want to be black, he wanted blue eyes and white skin. I was shocked that the cultural messaging around America’s preference for whiteness had gotten through to him at that age. He’s about to graduate from high school, and he seems pretty well adjusted (he’s gone to integrated schools his whole life).
