I prefer Ta-Nehisi’s construction. We are not white, but we have been led to believe that we are. Early in the history of this country, wealthy landowners made a compact with non-African indentured servants. They would be allowed to finish their servitude and become free, as long as they helped to suppress the Black servants who would be slaves in perpetuity. These “whites” have upheld this contract with enthusiasm ever since. You can spot them by their MAGA hats and AR-15s.

“…But the belief in the preeminence of hue and hair, the notion that these factors can correctly organize a society and that they signify deeper attributes, which are indelible — this is the new idea at the heart of these new people who have been brought up hopelessly, tragically, deceitfully, to believe that they are white.”

— Ta-Nehisi Coates

So, no. It isn’t okay to be “white” in any real sense of the word.
